Extension rod:

An extension rod, also known as an extension drill steel, extension drill rod, or extension steel, is a type of MM/male-male rod (also called a drifter rod) that comes in hexagonal and round cross-sections. Hexagonal rods are heavier and more rigid, making them more efficient at transferring energy and improving flushing. Round rods, on the other hand, are generally lighter and are commonly used in extension drilling applications. Conventional extension steel typically has duplicate threads on each end and tends to have larger diameters for longer steel lengths. Extension rods are made from hollow drill steels and are available in various lengths ranging from 600mm to 6400mm. The hollow part of the rod is called the flushing hole, which is used for transmitting water or air during drilling. The threads on the rod can be used for connecting couplings, shanks adapters, or bits.

Male/Female (M/F) rod, speed rod:
An alternative to coupling sleeves, the Male/Female (M/F) rod or speed rod includes a female part of the threaded connection as an integral part of the drill steel. M/F drill steel offers advantages over separate couplings, such as providing more rigid connections that are easier to uncouple and handle, resulting in longer service life. The benefits of drilling with M/F steel include quicker uncoupling, easy handling, tighter connections, potential for straighter holes, and improved durability.

Guide tube/Drill tube:

In top hammer drilling, guide tube and drill tube are mainly used for surface bench drilling and underground long hole drilling/production drilling. It is the STARTER rod for drilling straight holes in hard rock formations where hole deviation is obvious.

For Extension Rod and M/F steel process, the below two different types of heat treatment are used to strengthen high speed and powerful percussive drill string components to maximize their performance and reliability. Longer steel larger in diameter, conventional extension steel, Hexagonal and round cross sections are available.
– Carburization is a process used to harden the entire rod surface both internally and externally to strengthen and extend the life of the rod.
– High Frequency Induction is a process where only the thread ends of the rod are hardened to lengthen thread life.
